While we appreciate the excitement of a honeymoon overseas, we do realise that some newlyweds have time and budgetary constraints. Since most of you have already visited the well known destinations within the island, we decided to compile a list of local hideaways that you probably may never have come across before.

Located in Matugama, Kalutara, The Ark is an open plan bungalow that really does resemble its namesake. The inspiration for the building came from the structure of a contemporary watch hut. The property is nestled on a side of a hillock and is surrounded by lush greenery.

Villa Vista overlooks the Haputale mountain range as well as the jungles of the UVA province. The villa is a stone’s throw away from Horton Plains, Diyaluma Falls as well as Lipton’s Seat. You may even catch a glimpse of a wild elephant. Now, that would be an unforgettable honeymoon indeed.

This cottage is nestled within the grounds of The Planter’s House Hotel. The main hotel is located on a tea estate close to Haputale. We especially loved the four-poster beds and minimalist decor here.

Luxe Wilderness is a large colonial-style villa with breathtaking views of Nuwara Eliya town and Lake Gregory. Mount Pedro, the highest point within the Island is visible from here. We also think the bathroom with the massive tub that has amazing views of the mountains is a good reason to honeymoon here.

You are guaranteed a serene honeymoon at the Sky Villa. This quiet slice of paradise has a roof top plunge pool that is surrounded with a tropical garden a mere 1.5 miles away from town center.

This appropriately named honeymoon spot is ultra modern yet extremely cosy. The high elevation of the villa ensures that you can see all the way to the southern coast.

The Green House is a fitting name for a villa that is located on a golf club. A part of the Victoria Golf and Country Club estate, the Green House combines contemporary design with surroundings that are reminiscent of a different era.

The romantic Baulana Bungalow is a former colonial home. The bungalow is one of the few on our list that has a fireplace. You’ll be surrounded by 50 acres of land that nature has reclaimed from a former tea plantation.

The Clouds, offers the most astonishing views of the Island, allowing us to really comprehend how ridiculously beautiful Sri Lanka truly is. You can see tea plantations, lakes and mountains in five provinces but also the Indian Ocean shimmering in the distance.

This highly Instagramable property is Sri Lanka's first and only A - Frame Cabin. This dreamy location is the the bohemian home of our dreams and is the perfect honeymoon spot for hiking in Horton Plains.

While known as a beach destination, we decided to see what else Galle had to offer in terms a honeymoon destination. We luckily came across this stunning little eco-friendly tree house that surrounded paddy fields, araliya and coconut trees.

The standout feature of this charming cottage is the pool framed by the surrounding jungle. The property is secluded yet in close proximity to temples, tea estates, the Knuckles mountain range and Victoria Lake. In fact, you can actually glimpse the lake from the living room.
