Tea parties are far from from boring in our book. We think the following selection of our favorite tea party moments in pop culture proves that tea parties and plotting go hand in hand.
1. Tea at Hagrid's
Hagrid’s hut borders the forbidden forest, which pretty much tells us that visiting him is not going to be an ordinary occurrence. When Harry, Ron and Hermione visit Hagrid’s hut for the first time he hosts them for tea. Although he doesn’t actually invite them for tea in a traditional sense, he does serve them rock cakes and massive barrels of brown tea. Our favorite part about the tea scene is Hagrid’s copper kettle which is just about as hefty as he.

2. Mary Poppins
Can anyone forget the I love to laugh song in the tea party scene in the original Mary Poppins? Mary Poppins takes Jane, Micheal and and Bert to visit her Uncle Albert one afternoon. Uncle Albert has a condition that causes his laughter to send him soaring to the ceiling, which is where they find him. Naturally, the laughter is infectious and causes Poppins and the rest of the gang to float up to meet him. Poppins even enchants the tea table into floating up to them.

3. Alice in Wonderland
Every version of this unforgettable story has iconic tea party moments with the Mad hatter, Cheshire Cat and March hare ganging up to intrigue and exasperate Alice in equal measures.
If you grew up watching Disney movies like we did, you probably remember the “UNbirthday” party scene where Alice crashes the Madhatter’s tea party. What a mad riot of bright colors and fireworks this scene is. The Tim Burton version in contrast, has a certain decaying elegance in the tea party scene with the sudden appearance and disappearance of the Cheshire cat to liven up the scene.

4. The Great Gatsby
The tea party scene where Gatsby gets Nick to bring Daisy to meet him is one of the most visually stunning depictions of an onscreen tea party. The fairy tale like enchantment of the pastel-heavy tea treats and flowers contrasts heavily with the pouring rain outside. A tense and unsmiling Gatsby is sitting somewhat absurdly in the midst of a floral forest, wondering if the love of his life will turn up. We confess that we did freeze quite a few frames so we could truly take in and absorb every single stunning detail of this scene.

5. The Princess Diaries
Another of our favorite tea party pop culture moments, is the awkward tea party that Mia’s grandmother hosts. This is the critical scene in which she discovers that she is actually the heir to the kingdom of Genovia. We will readily admit that we involuntarily flinched every time Mia manhandled the crockery. Savage!

6. Sucker by The Jonas Brothers
The music video for this song actually won the best pop video category during the MTV Video Music Awards with good reason. Directed by Anthony Mandler, the video is one of the trippiest tributes to tea parties that we have ever seen. Filmed in a massive gothic mansion, the video is filled with bunnies, beautiful gardens and loaded tea tables. The Jonas brothers and their respective spouses getting up to all kinds of highjinks like fencing, outdoor bubble baths and conga lines.

7. Tea with the Tyrells on Game of Thrones
Softened with her favorite teatime treat lemon cakes, Sansa Stark is encouraged to spill the tea on the Lannisters by Olenenna Tyrell and her granddaughter Margery. Without giving away too many spoilers, the conversation between the three women during this seemingly genteel tea party scene serves as a catalyst for the destruction of multiple houses on Game of Thrones. All with a waterfront view.

8. You need to calm down by Taylor Swift
This track is essentially anthem that denounces the oppression of the LGBTQ community. We love how Taylor Swift has turned the tables on trolls who slut shame her and used her platform for a worthy cause. Taylor and her posse have a little tea party while giving those angry Right-wing types the side eye they deserve. With cameos from Ryan Reynolds, Ellen , Katy Perry and Lavern Cox amount others, this video is just pure feel good vibes with just a tiny bit of tea spilling.
